Message from the Principal

Welcome to Blossomland Learning Center!

Dear Parents and Caregivers:

You and your student are about to embark on a very special journey.  At Blossomland, students learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment that looks at the whole child.

In addition to academic and functional skills, students may also need support in the following areas, based on their individual needs identified in their IEP.

  • Gross Motor Skills

  • Fine Motor Skills

  • Sensory Skills

  • Communication & Language Skills

  • Daily Living Skills

  • Social-Emotional & Behavioral Skills

  • Vision & Hearing Development

  • Medical needs in the educational environment

At Blossomland, our staff:

  • Build and foster positive relationships with students and families

  • Incorporate specials, like swim, music and gym into our daily schedule

  • Utilize hands-on learning activities during instruction

  • Develop weekly schedules and lesson plans that allow teachers to work with students to achieve their goals

  • Focus on academic skills in the areas of language arts, math, science and social studies

  • Build and develop functional living and personal care skills

  • Monitor and report progress on the skills identified for each student

Educators at Blossomland are all highly qualified and receive regular training on evidenced-based practices, therapeutic interventions, and medical certifications/training.

Staff are trained in the Cornell Therapeutic Crisis Intervention system annually to address the behavioral needs of our students.

We also utilize a Positive Behavior Interventions and Support Program called S.T.A.R.S., which stands for:

  • Safety

  • Teamwork

  • Attitude

  • Respect

  • Success

The S.T.A.R.S. model has become Blossomland’s guidelines for success and is based on the following key points:

  • All students must be treated with dignity.

  • Students should be taught the skills and behaviors necessary for success.

  • Motivation and responsibility should be encouraged through positive interactions and building relationships with students.

  • Student misbehavior represents a teaching opportunity.

Community-based Instruction & Life Skills

Students over the age of 16 participate in community-based instruction (CBI) providing an opportunity to travel to various businesses and agencies throughout the county. The focus of this instruction is to:

  • Provide community experiences for our most severe population, which allow them to practice learned skills in real life settings of the community.

  • Develop the pre-vocational and vocational skills of students working towards future employment.

  • Develop the skills to travel throughout the community independently or through the use of public transportation.

We look forward to working with you and your student as they learn and grow to the best of their abilities.
